What we aim to achieve…Every child is unique. We try to take this into account in our work. This is why the personal well-being and the individual needs of every child determine our work as well. In cooperation with parents, we attempt to design our care and furthering in such a way as to make development possible, allowing children to foster their personalities, gain experience and take an active part in the life of their surroundings. The common goals are determined and documented for each child in advancements plans. The gamut of our paedagocial efforts includes intensive individual
care and furtherance of group processes on one end of the scale,
and watchful attentiveness or just leaving in peace on the other.
Care and close-to-life training form part of our tasks, as
do comprehensive leisure facilities and learning guidance. For Whom? For handicapped children of compulsory school age: week-care (from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon) or day-care (from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.), covering all periods of time when the children are not at school. Our operating hours go along with school schedules, meaning there are no opening hours on weekends, days of school closure and during vacations. Additionally, every child takes part in a group weekend and a vacation event once per school year. In 7 school-boarding groups, we attend to 70 children aged 6 - 18 years. The groups are of heterogeneous composition as to age, gender, gravity/ type of handicap. Most of the children attend the " Special Classes for Physically and Multiple-Handicapped children" (S classes, ASO classes, and elementary school integration classes) located on the premises of the former "Hirten" Monastery, while some go to integration classes at compulsory schools in Graz. Our competenceEach group works as a team in which all attendants apply their professional knowledge and dedication to achieving the common objectives. Differing educational backgrounds (special and social paedagogics and attendants for the handicapped, teachers, nurses… female or male) assure various approaches and methods and thus a broad spectrum of ideas. The school-boarding group forms the interface between parents, therapists, teachers, psychologists, and other psychological parents of the child. The child's attendant takes care of the flow of information and of arranging a meeting among all persons concerned to discuss advancement plans twice per school-year.Specialized facilities – MIRABILIS® – Wonderland of the Senses - are at the disposal of the handicapped and multiple and severely disabled children at the School Boarding Centre.
